Selecting a Persian Cat

The exotic and majestic appearance of the Persian cat captures the attention of cat lovers everywhere, making it one of the most desirable breeds of cats today. Their dense and lush long-haired coat, short legs and broad head with round eyes and flat muzzle faces are distinct physical traits that make them easily identifiable to just about everyone.

According to the Cat Fanciers’ Association, there are seven main categories of Persians. You can visit their web site for specific information on each group and view pictures.

1. Himalayans

2. Solid Colors

3. Silver and Golden

4. Calico and Bicolor

5. Smoke and Shaded

6. Tabby

7. Particolor

Within these categories, there are many colors and variations. The many different kinds of Persians that are available permit anyone to pick the perfect companion. However, before running out and snatching up the first Persian you see, there are several factors for purchasing a Persian you ought to consider.

First, give some thought on how this new addition will get along with any pets you already have. Then assess if you are able to take the time to groom this cat properly everyday. The next issue might be the hardest thing to decide. That is narrowing down which of the seven types of Persians you like the most. However, once that is resolved, you could even settle on the color you would prefer. After that, you may have a partiality for the specific sex of your pet. A significant issue to consider is if you intend on entering your cat in show competitions or if you are just looking for a buddy. A show quality Persian will generally cost more.

Depending on your personality and time constraints, do you want and are you able to raise a kitten? Then you will want to locate a reputable breeder. This is an important matter because the better the breeder, the better your chance of acquiring a strong and healthy kitten. See if the kitten appears to be well taken care of and is being raised in clean surroundings. Has a veterinary done a complete checkup for health problems and is it up-to-date with shots? Is the breeder aware of any genetic conditions that may run in this kitten’s pedigree lineage? Remember to obtain a health contract or guarantee from the breeder. A honest breeder will have no problem supplying you with one. Additionally, you will need the vaccination certificate. If the kitten is registered or you are planning to register it, you will need these papers from the breeder too.

Perhaps you are leaning toward an older cat. Adopting from a shelter or rescue could be a rewarding experience, not to mention saving a life. Just realize that this cat might have been abandoned due to a major health or personality problem. Ask a lot of questions and spend as much time with the cat as you can to determine if it will be a good pet for you.

No matter what cat you ultimately select, by doing your homework and being honest with yourself on your particular personality and situation, picking the perfect Persian can be a fun experience that later grows into a long loving relationship.

Great Naming Ideas for Orange Cats and Kittens

I’ve been compiling a list of names for orange cats and kittens on my Pet Numerology website for some time now.  There are a number of inspiring sources for orange kitty names, including fire, orange foods, and sunny things.

There are many foods ranging from yellow to red that make fantastic names for orange cats.

Spices make excellent names for cats.  Clove, Cumin and Nutmeg are good for cats with slightly darker coats.  Curry is good for a more yellow cat, Ginger is perfect if more orange, and Cinnamon or Paprika if more red or for a very active cat.

Fruits can be used for names.  Citrus is a good name for any hue, as there are a variety of citrus fruits, all of them in the yellow to red spectrum.  Banana is good for a more yellow kitty, especially fitting if they are something of a goof ball.  For an orange cat consider Mango, Pumpkin, or Tangerine – which are all very orange fruits.  Tomato fits a very red cat.

For a sweet cat consider the name of something sweet.  Butterscotch and Carmel are both sweet toppings in a soft orange color.  Custard is a soft yellow, while Creamsicle is a more vibrant orange.  Twinkies of course, are a light yellow.

More yellow foods are Butter (very yellow) and Mustard (spicy – good for an active cat). More orange foods are Cheddar (the cheese), Marmalade, Tang (the instant powdered orange juice), Tropicana (the famous orange juice brand), and Yolk (the orange center of an egg). Another red food is Catsup or Ketchup.  Note that Catsup has the word cat in it.

Don’t forget the sun when thinking of names, especially for a happy cat.  Examples are Solar, Summer, Sunny, and Sunshine.

Fire is usually seen as red, and so good for a reddish cat.  Fiery names are Blaze, Fireball, and Flame.

Many flowers are yellow including Buttercup, Dandelion, and Saffron.  Note that Dandelion also has the word lion, which is a very big cat, in it.

Two famous orange cats are Morris (who starred in cat food commercials in the 1970s) and Tigger (who was in the Winnie the Pooh books).

Don’t overlook orange gems or metal, including Amber (more yellow), Bronze (orange – red), Copper (red), or Topaz (yellow).

Some other orange stuff is Autumn (with orange leaves), Cheetah (a big yellow cat), Five Ball (the orange ball in the game of pool), Halloween (which has the traditional colors of orange and black), Iodine (which is red), and Mars (which is the red planet). Finally, consider some more words that describe orange like Auburn (dark orange), Crimson (very red), Gold (or Goldie), Ochre, and Rusty (dark red).

Medicine Toxicity In Cats

Vet professionals can provide pet owners with ample amounts of information regarding pet health—it is suggested that pet owners have a close personal relationship with their vets. Vets state that pet owners should be more aware of acetaminophen and its use, and that it should not be administered to pets.

Acetaminophen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drug commonly available in such human forms as Tylenol and Percoset. It is also used in various other cold and flu medications. Although acetaminophen is a safe drug for humans to take to relieve minor aches and pains, it is highly toxic to your cat! Even one pill can be a deadly dose for a cat. Vets tell us to never give Tylenol (or any other form of acetaminophen) to your cat! Naturally, as a pet owner, I have heard people state that they have given their animals, dogs and cats, medications which were meant for humans. I did not think anything of it at the time; however, now that I am aware of this information, I will be more inclined to give others my opinion regarding their use of human medicines for animals.

While some cats suffer from acetaminophen toxicity because they are given a pill, many cats may eat pills that are just lying around the bathroom. Some cats can even destroy the bottle the pills come in and get to the pills and ingest them this way. If you ever give your cat acetaminophen or even suspect that it has had access to it, take it to your vet immediately!

In cats, acetaminophen is metabolized to a toxic compound that produces free radicals which are harmful to the liver and red blood cells. Early signs of acetaminophen toxicity include vomiting, drooling, dullness, and discoloration of the gums to a brownish color. Within 24 hours your cat may experience convulsions, a swollen face and extremities, a coma, or sudden death. After about 24 hours toxic, liver failure occurs and signs will include yellowing of the mucous membranes and eyes, and a painful abdomen.

Treatment is possible if started within a few hours of ingestion. Treatment will usually consist of IV fluids, and the administering of charcoal to your cat to bind the excess drug. The veterinarian may also give her something to induce vomiting. Your cat will need to stay in the veterinary hospital for a few days. If liver failure has occurred, your vet will try to prevent any further damage to the liver. However, prognosis for a complete recovery is very poor in this case.

To prevent a possible toxicity in your cat, never administer any medications of any kind without previous instructions from your vet. If you are in doubt about whether a certain drug is safe for your cat, call your veterinarian’s office and ask. Never just assume that a drug that is safe for you will be safe for your cat. Pet owners can take this good advice and apply it each day.

All pet owners should check with their vets for further information on their pets’ general health; other important helpful points, in addition to those stated above, can be obtained from vet professionals who are used to seeing various kinds of pets and therefore, can provide assistance to pet owners.

Boost The Immune System With Cats Claw

Because there are so many kinds of cat’s claw supplements, such as: cat’s claw leaves, cat’s claw bark, and cat’s claw twigs, cat’s claw is one of the most confusing nutritional supplements currently available in health food stores. Although all cat’s claw supplements claim to help the immune system, only the root of Uncaria tomentosa gives the true health benefits by possessing the healing power to treat and prevent diseases such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcers, degenerative diseases, and also providing anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-microbial benefits. However, only those Uncaria tomentosa roots that contain ‘good spirits,’ seen by Ashaninka healers of the Ashaninka tribe contain healing properties. If these good spirits are mixed with any root that does not contain good spirits, the healing power is lost. With the use of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), scientists can now see the ‘good spirits’ too. These good spirits are actually medicinal compounds called pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids (POAs).

POAs directly interact with white blood cells, which fight diseases we catch, such as colds and flu, along with diseases that start in our own cells, such as cancer and autoimmune diseases. Some POAs also help white blood cells called macrophages, which engulf and digest foreign material, work faster by engulfing more bacteria and disease causing microbes. This medicinal compound also increases the production of interleukin, a chemical protein secreted by macrophages that alerts resting white blood cells and forces them into action and helps make other biochemicals that are helpful to the immune system. POAs also help increase the number of white blood cells that make antibodies that kill germs, or B cells. Most importantly, POAs increase the number of T cells, including: Helper T cells, Suppressor T cells, and Killer T cells, which destroy cancer cells. This increased number of T cells is also very important in a disease such as AIDS.

According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), there are 3000 plant extracts that can kill cancer cells, 70 percent of these plants being found only in the rain forest. The fertile environment provided by the rain forest, due to the constant rain from January to December and the 75-80 degree Fahrenheit temperatures, allows the plants grown to be amazingly rich in alkaloids and other medicinal compounds. When the Ashaninka harvest the plant, they work intelligently to keep it perpetually healthy. Individual plants are never completely harvested. Only one third of their roots are collected at any time and then no more root is harvested from that plant for the next ten years, allowing re-growth in the remaining root. Because the Ashaninka are a generous people, they see no benefit in hoarding the cat’s claw for themselves. As their homelands continue to be destroyed by deforestation, they want to make sure that the plant’s healing properties continue on.

Some cat’s claw roots have good spirits, POAs, while others tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids, TOAs, which do not help the immune system at all. Since Uncaria tomentosa plants look almost identical, it is hard to tell if they contain healing properties or non-helpful properties. Plants containing POAs one year may contain TOAs the following year because their alkaloid chemotypes change at will. After scientists discovered that they could ‘see’ the presence of TOAs using the HPLC technology, they gained the ability to harvest cat’s claw root extracts with POAs consistently. Because buying products that contain TOAs will only benefit the cat’s claw distributor due to its canceling effects on POAs, it is important to read the label of the cat’s claw root product you are considering buying.

In return for harvesting, the Ashaninka are directly paid by the distributors. This arrangement provides the Ashaninka with the ability to make their own decisions as to how to spend this income, allowing them to make improvements in the tribe’s water supply and in their living areas. This arrangement also protects the rain forest, which gives us its many nuts, fruits, oil producing, and medicinal plants. Because of all its products, the rain forest hold more economic value than if it was cut down and used for timber or grazing land for cattle. Cats claw can be purchased at any health food store make sure you check the label to ensure you are receiving the Uncaria tomentosa official Cats Claw.

Cat Fleas Home Remedies For Cats

This is not the most pleasant question to ask a pet owner, but does your cat have fleas?

Would you like to know about home remedies for cats to bring relief to your pets?

Fleas are all around us. Some communities have excellent environmental sprays to help keep the flea and mosquito population to a minimum.

It helps when individuals and families also refrain from collecting water and/or moisture around or under their houses, sand or gravel around garages, sheds, yards and gardens. Collected water is a breeding nursery for mosquitoes, and the moisture around shrubs is heaven to fleas.

Moisture from water, humidity and warmth or being in a warm climate is flea paradise. Ticks love the woods, shrubs, and high grasses. These three insects are a menace to our pets and us.

When you allow your cat or cats to roam outside where they are exposed to these flea nurseries, mosquito bins and tick hideouts and you do not use insecticides, you will need to check your pets each time they re-enter the house.

The best prevention is not to have these insects get started. Your pet can wear a flea collar, or flea powder, or a flea spray. Our personal pets are guarded with a once a month topical flea and tick control product. Many of these products are available over the counter or prescribed by your vet. Thank Goodness!

A flea comb can be used, but it does not collect many fleas. Fleas do not like soapy water. Shampoo your cat and maintain extra cleanliness and keep your cat indoors.

If the flea infestation should get worse, would you want to see yourself cleaning, vacuuming, spraying and fogging the cat, the house, and the yard for weeks?

Your cat gave you signals of itching, scratching, biting and losing hair as she tried to kill the fleas. The female flea is similar to the mosquito in that they need blood to either produce or feed their young.

Your cat may have sensitive skin or be allergic to the saliva from the fleas. The fleabite can also do the same for a human being. Both cats and human beings will have red irritated skin and itching. Scratching is the worst thing to do as this can cause an infection.

Another insect that we include when talking about fleas is the tick. The tick likes to fasten itself to any warm-blooded animal. The worse for humans is Lyme disease caused by an infected deer tick.

Have you ever seen a tick?

This is one insect that I do not like to handle because of how you need to remove it. Take a pair of tweezers, make sure you have a solid grip on its head, and securely and slowly withdraw the head and body from the pet.

Be very sure that you have withdrawn the entire insect. After removing the tick place it in a container of rubbing alcohol and close the container with a lid.

The cat will have redness and swelling at the bite site. Observe your cat for about a week looking for any signs of fever, loss of appetite, listlessness, stiffness in its movements. Does she appear to have pain or is there leg paralysis?

One of the experiences that I had while working for a vet was to remove ticks on a paralyzed dog. The owners were worried as to how their pet could have been paralyzed so quickly. I removed many ticks from the dog.

When I arrived at work the following day, the vet had me check on this dog immediately to see what happens when you remove ticks. Well, that dog was up on all four legs and ready to go home. It seemed like a miracle.

A simple solution is to use preventive flea and tick products for your cats and insecticides for the environment to help exterminate fleas.

An ounce of prevention is much more affordable than a pound of cure. Here is how you can solve many of your cats itching and scratching problems. Visit the pet section of Tricia Deed at http://www.Infotrish.vpweb.com/ and review Home Remedies for Cats and Dogs.

Through the years I have learned to be a jack-of-all-trades and maybe mastered one. Because my interests are many, diversity has been the road most traveled. Currently my interest is hobbies which I have combined with my internet marketing business.

Living With Cats And Carpet

If you have cats you probably already know what a mess they can be. They are constantly messing up something and can be a pain. They are however very much worth the effort and most cat owners could not do without one. Read this article for some tips that will help you live with both cats and carpets.

The number one thing that cats do to carpet to damage it is to urinate on it. Cat urine is very high ammonia and can do a great deal of damage to the carpet as well as smell horrible. It is even more destructive than dog urine. To prevent this damage you should always keep your cats liter box cleaned to prevent them from going elsewhere. Also have them checked by a vet regularly because things like urinary tract infections can cause them to urinate in strange places. If they do have an accident try to blot it up as soon as possible and then clean it with a solution of one part white distilled vinegar to three parts water. This should take the color and the smell out of the spot. Another way that cats can harm carpet is tracking litter into the room. Litter is basically clay and if it gets wet you will have quite a mess in your carpet. To prevent damage you should keep your litter box on a tiled or otherwise hard surface. Also try to use a litter mat in front of the box to catch any litter from their feet. If you must keep it near the carpet be sure to vacuum regularly to prevent a buildup. The last thing I will discuss that cats do is hacking up fur balls. These can cause damage because they are often accompanied by food or whatever else the cat has in their system containing dyes. To prevent problems with fur balls you should bath your cat regularly or brush them to get rid of excess hair. If your animal has a large problem with them you can ask your vet about hairball medicine which should help the problem.

As you can see, cats do quite a bit of damage to carpet. Most of the problems though can be avoided with a little care so it really is possible to live with both cats and carpet.
