The Burmese breed began in the 1930 with a female cat named Wong Mau, which was brought from Myanmar (Burma) to the United States. It was said that this cat was brought back from a sailor who in which gave it to a United States doctor, Dr. Thompson. Dr. Thompson was taken back from this cat due to its unique coat and personality. He was very interested in making another cat just like Wong Mau. Dr. Thompson found while he was trying to breed Wong Mau, she was actually half Siamese and half Burmese. From the Burmese side, it retain its sable color, where when the coat is from solid black to a dark sable color. This is very noticeable during the kitten stage but not when the cats get older.

The Burmese cat was accepted in the Cat Fancier Association in 1936. With this the popularity of the Burmese cat began to rise. Breeders began to importing cats from Myanmar to continue the breed. Although Siamese breeders were not happy with the breeding of the Burmese cat because they thought that the Burmese was a Siamese with a bad coat. During this time there has been such a huge confusion on what the difference between a Burmese and a hybrid Burmese/Siamese. In fact, the CFA removed its recognition of the Burmese breed in 1947. Luckily this only lasted for about six years. In 1953, the CFA re-established the Burmese breed.

It seems like males and females differ in their temperament. Males tend to calmer lounge wherever they please. With females, they are very curious and emotionally attached to their owners. Males tend to be Overall, Burmese cats are very loyal and likes to not only give affection but also receive it as well. This breed is very active but at times, can be very clumsy. Burmese cats should be fairly easy to train given that these cats are highly intelligent.

These cats have a good medium-sized  and muscular build. Their coat is fine and glossy with a satin-like texture. Their fur is pretty short, so excessive grooming is not needed. Burmese comes in variety of colors. The popular colors are sable, champagne, blue and platinum.
