PALM CITY — The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) is looking to neuter 60 male cats in one day on Tuesday, May 24. They’re targeting male cats over four months and will offer special pricing. The event will take place at the HSTC’s shelter, 4100 SW Leighton Farm Ave., in Palm City from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. The sterilization fee is $10 — half the normal cost — and includes a microchip and a rabies vaccination.
This service is offered through the HSTC’s AniMobile program, a state-of-the-art mobile veterinary surgical unit that provides spay and neuter services for pets under 40 pounds. Since this program started in 2004, Animobile has performed more than 2,000 sterilizations. To register, call 772-223-8822. Walk-ins will not be allowed.
“Kitten Season” also has begun, with a marked increase in the number of kittens being delivered to the shelter that are in need of foster parents. The HSTC is looking for more volunteers who are willing to serve as foster parents to care for these kittens who are not yet available for adoption due to age, illness or injury.
On average, a pet spends two to six weeks in a foster home. Foster volunteers are responsible for their pet’s care, feeding, medicating, socializing and providing general tender loving care. HSTC will provide help, if needed. At the end of the foster period, a veterinarian will evaluate and give medical clearance for adoption upon which the foster parent will have the option of returning the pet to the shelter or participating in the HSTC’s Mobile Adoption Program to find a permanent and loving home for the foster pet.
The foster process includes an application specific to foster care, an orientation and a brief interview. For those who already own pets, the HSTC requires that they are current on all vaccinations. To learn more about fostering, contact Bitsy McKay at 772-600-3217. For more information about the HSTC’s programs visit http://www.hstc1.org.
